Lettes players 23-under, score is not --

Pekin institution pounds out 34 runs after renaming field

PEKIN - It was a memorable start Wednesday for the Pekin Lettes' 73rd women's softball season at Mineral Springs Park for a variety of reasons. The 22-1 and 12-0 wins over Schuyler County Vision added a nice touch to the special night. Before the opening games, the field which has been home to so many great former Pekin Lettes teams was officially named Lettes Field by the Pekin Park District.

Pekin Lettes earn Hall of Fame spot

PEKIN - Fred Reader remembers a time when the Pekin Lettes softball organization was the hottest show around these parts during the summer, drawing anywhere from 4,000 to 5,000 spectators. So it's only appropriate, he says, that the oldest continuously running softball franchise in the nation would be inducted into the Amateur Softball Association's Hall of Fame during a ceremony to be held Saturday in Pekin.

Pekin team goes into state HOF

Two generations of Lettes among those honored by amateur association

PEKIN - More than 125,000 fans watched the Pekin Lettes fast-pitch softball team play 20 home games in 1960. Lettes teams of that area were so dominant they usually got to bypass the state tournament and advance automatically to the national tournament. It's for that type of dynasty the Lettes were one of the first teams inducted in the new category added this year by the Illinois Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame.

Crying Foul - Former Pekin Lettes softball players claim they didn't get invites to team's Hall of Fame induction

PEKIN - Eleanor "Rudy" Rudolph and Mary Moak would have been there. Even though she lives in Arizona, Lorene Ramsey said she would have tried to go. But the former Pekin Lettes claim they never received an official invitation to the team's induction into the Amateur Softball Association's Hall of Fame in Pekin earlier this month. "I don't want to point the finger on anyone individually," said Rudolph

Pekin Lettes deserve better

The Pekin Lettes deserve better than they have gotten from central Illinois. Recently the team was inducted into the Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame. A ceremony was held at the Dragon's Dome in Pekin on April 2. No Lettes showed up because, they say, they never got invitations. Organizers for the event say they mailed them. Won't be long before it will be the post office's fault. It does seem strange, though, that nobody affiliated with the ASA
